Sunscreen: Protection For Your Skin

With the shivering cold winter months upon us, we would like to think that we are not exposed to sun  rays. Well, newsflash- aging causing UV rays are actually the same strength all year round, even on rainy days. The sun’s dangerous UV rays not only leads to premature aging but to some cancers of the skin. When clients ask what the best anti aging product is, my answer is simple. It’s sunscreen. Period. Daily sunscreen use is a great way of slowing or preventing premature aging and most importantly, in possible prevention of skin cancers. So who should be using sunscreen? Basically, everyone. But don’t be fooled by selling gimmicks. No sunscreen can fully protect your skin from UV rays. Let’s look at it in terms of percentages: SPF of 30 protects 97%, SPF 50 protects 98%, and SPF 15 protects 93%. As you see, there’s only one percent difference, so there’s no need to spend extra on sunscreen that claims 100% protection. Working indoors? Even those working inside are exposed, as UVA can still penetrate through windows. Sunscreen should be applied on the skin 30 minutes before sun exposure, and don’t forget to reapply. Microneedling For Skin Rejuvenation And Prevention

Microneedling is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation treatment.  Microneedling improves skin’s texture, and when performed properly, microneedling is safe and benefits skin.  There are few microneedling devices, basically they work similarly, delivering similar results to one another.  Microneedling size is what determines extent of results.  Let’s compare 0.5 and 1.0 mm microneedles.

0.5mm needle size:  If fine lines, mild scarring, and hyperpigmentation is your concern, then using this micro needle size is the right fit.  There is also added benefits of skin product absorption.  This is specially desirable when using prescription topicals. However, this holds true for any micro needles since micro channels are being created on the skin.  These are less painful than longer sizes.  Numbing cream is usually not necessary.  Patients describe this microneedling length as “velcro” being rolled on their skin.  Erythema will most likely be present post treatment, however, recovery time is approximately a day or two.  Peeling and some dryness have also been reported as well.  This micro needle size can actually produce impressive results, however, it triggers  mild collagen production.  Therefore, six to perhaps ten treatments are required.  There is minimal risk of pin point bleeding, this is normal.

1.0mm needle size: Just like other micro-needle lengths, the goal is to create micro injuries to the skin. In return, the body stimulates collagen and elastin which are the skin’s structural matrix, giving skin its resilience.  This reverses and prevents the signs of aging.  Micro needles work the same way lasers would, without heat (there is mcroneedling with radio frequency energy using heat, but this is not discussed here).  Applying numbing cream prior to 1.0mm microneedling treatments is necessary.  Erythema on the skin will be more noticeable and may last a few days longer than 0.5mm treatments. As previously mentioned, outcomes will depend on micro needle size. Now let us recap the multiple benefits of microneedling:

*Reduces fine lines and deep wrinkles using the body’s own natural healing mechanism.

*Improves scars.

*Reverses hyperpigmentation and photodamage.

*Helps aging skin.

*Improves pore size appearance.

*Increases product absorption.

Just like other skin treatments, individual results vary, however, microneedling technique has been demonstrated to be highly effective in treating signs of aging and prevention.

Micro needling For Skin Rejuvenation

micro needling treatmentMicro needling treatment has been used in Europe for many years. Now, it has become very popular here in North America, for its efficacy on the skin, and it is here to stay. Microneedling uses tiny needles, ranging from 0.5 to 1.0 mm in length, to stimulate collagen. As the needles create microchannels in the skin, the body responds by healing itself, creating more collagen. This process occurs almost immediately. At SD Aesthetics we use DermaFrac, for its safety and predictable results.
Along with 180 micro needles, it combines other rejuvenating technologies to infuse powerful serums into the skin. Specific ingredients are selected to target your skin’s concerns:
Hyaluronic acid to hydrate
Kojic acid to lighten
Salicylic acid to clarify
Peptides to rejuvenate
Growth factors for healing and healthy cells
Vitamin C for antioxidant protection
As always treatments are customized, however, we suggest series of 6 to 10 , administered every 1 to 2 weeks, followed by a monthly or bimonthy maintenance. Treatments should not be performed until 7 days after having had Botox, fillers, waxing, electrolysis, or high frequency. Unlike other resurfacing skin treatments, microneedling is one of my favorites because there is no removal of the top layer of the skin, meaning there is no downtime post treatment.
